3/5ths of the family converted… to Apple
Yeah exactly as the topic says. I have officially converted 3/5ths of my family to a Mac. All that in less then 7 months after I started using a Mac. This isn’t even including all the neighbors I have converted. If I were to include them, my number would be at 15-20. Today I hooked up my mom’s new Power Mac G4 (not new new obviously). It is a good machine I got 2nd hand. All it needed was some memory and it was good to go. Installed OS 10.4 Tiger on the machine and she is already to go. My mom is actually looking forward to using the computer now and she was catching on quite quickly. This is the same person that still isn’t comfortable using Ctrl-V and Ctrl-C back on the PC but is now happily using Apple Key + V & Apple Key + C on her Mac. Her answer is that using a Mac seems more fun then using a PC and I tend to agree. I mean the tools are all there. She adds an album in iPhoto and she can now go into Desktop & Screensavers in the System Preferences and have that newly created album as a rotating background and screensaver. Or how about emailing it to her friend in Holland? On the PC you either had to use the software program provided (like Kodak Easyshare) and it would email it from within Kodak in its own standard to Holland or manually select the full size (2200 x 1800 resolution image, 2mb large) and attach it in Outlook. Now in iPhoto she just selects the photos and/or album she wants to send, goes up to the menu bar hits Share -> Email and it will ask you what size would you like it to be. She hits 800×600 and Entourage now opens with the messages attached. Took all but 30 seconds. This is exactly what she was looking for. Not to mention that there won’t be anymore spyware and/or virus clean up calls (yay!!).
So now all that is left to switch is my dad and my sister. My sister is easy as she already wants to use my mom’s new mac. She just doesn’t have the money. My dad though is going to be the toughest to switch. He likes his Windows machine. In due time though I think I will have the entire family switched by end of 2008. Figuring my sister’s machine will breakdown begging for no more spyware in 2006 and my dad’s machine will need some sort of upgrade by 2008.
